Diary #1

Date: November 1st 1789

Today my close customer Alexandre Constantin bought one of my designed close for his sister again. As usual, we talked about how life goes and things that we are having a hard time. However, today we had a long conversation about the estate. We are both in third estate, I was in the urban lower class and he was in the bourgeoisie.
Alexandre is 38 year old his occupation is a retired soldier and fisherman. He is handsome, has short hair, long noes, piercing eyes, and his height is about 203 cm. He’s from Dieppe, France. His daily routine is to fish at Dieppe and sell them at the Paris Market. The first time we talked, he introduced about his family background and he aid that
his family was a line of fishermen, passing down their skills from generation to generation. He has a grandmother, father, little brother, little sister, wife, and male infant child.
Since we know how to speak French, we talked about life these days in French.
Today morning we came from the social and political system of France the Old Regime. All the people of France including Alexandre and I were divided into three large social classes. Two of those estates had privileges, which means that those were the people who are able to access to high offices and exemptions from paying taxes. The third estate were where we were included. For example, like people who is having a hard time paying taxes and having a hard time earning money.
After we came out of the Old Regime, he came over to my house and talked about the estate while drinking tea. While I was talking with him, I thought that it was very comfortable to talk. We talked about how the social and political system of France should change because only the third estate is the one who is mostly paying the taxes even though we are all poor, when the first and second estate barely pay taxes. So, today we mostly talked about how we don’t get about the political system of France.

Diary #2

Date: January 21st, 1793

Today there was a execution of Louis XVI. This morning, my boyfriend Bastien Roux and I had a date at the bottom of the apple tree and went to a shop that sells an apple pie. While Bastien and I were eating apple pie, we heard this crowd of people jeering at someone. Since, we were curious, we went to the crowd and asked who they were jeering to. Bastien and I asked one of the citizen who they were jeering at. They were jeering at Louis XVI. It was because Louis XVI tried to escape France but he ended up as being caught. As soon as we heard that Bastien and I got really mad too because he had a weak leadership. He only cared more about court life than his nation. Also, Marie Antoinette were only caring about her fashion! I agree that being fashionable is a good thing and it makes you look good in front of everyone. But, marie Antoinette was always too much. Seriously the rumor of her dress cost and her necklace was unbelievable. There are so many things to list the things that Marie and Louis did.
It was hard to watch for me to watch Louis XVI at the guillotine because there were lots of people who came and watched. They were all shouting and yelling to hurry and execute him. Bastien and I were really scared to watch Louis XVI head getting cut out. I decided to not watch it because I was too scared to watch it. However, Bastien saw it and he told me that the executer hold Louis XVI’s head. After I heard that, I was able to imagine it in my head. I felt kind of bad for Louis XVI because if he just have cared more to the citizens and cared more to his nation, then this day wouldn’t have happened. Or maybe if he didn’t try to escape he would’ve been survived. Anyways, today was a very shocking and scariest day I’ve ever had.

Diary #3

Date: November 9, 1799

Today, Marguerite Marcoux who is a made came over to my house to take the clothes that I designed for her owner. She came over to my house several times to take the designed clothes. Whenever she was waiting for me to get the designed clothes, she looked at the news paper all the time and we had a bit of a conversation.
Today, it was the most longest conversation we have ever had. Since she just always works inside the house and barely look at the news paper, I had to explain to her about Copu d’etat. On today’s news paper, it talked about Napoleon’s taking action. So I explained to Marguerite about what Copu d’etat is. It was really hard to explain but I explained my best. I explained to her that Copu d’etat is like a sudden seizure of power like Napoleon’s. As it said on the news paper I told her what he did. Troops under his command surrounded the national legislature and drove out most of its members. The lawmakers who remained then voted to dissolve the Directory. In its place, they established a group of three consuls, one of whom was Napoleon. Napoleon quickly took the tile of first consul and assumed the powers of a dictator.
After I explained to her what Copu d’etat is, Marguerite was asking me if whether I like the way Napoleon is ruling France right now. Suddenly, it made me think for a while. Since she didn't[ know much about how the society is going, she was asking me about how I think the rule of France is going. After thinking for a while, I told her that I think that Napoleon is ruling France pretty well than I thought. For now, I like the way Napoleon is ruling France because he is not ruling like how Louis XVI did. Napoleon had kept many of the changes that had come with the revolution. Also, whenever I read the newspaper I can see that Napoleon is giving some change to France. For example, he set up an efficient method of tax collection and established a national banking system.
Another fun day have passed again and it seemed like I was a teacher because I taught Marguerite almost everything about what’s happening in France right now! I hope Marguerite understood everything of what I said.
